Get wilderness area permits. Each person must get their own permit. If we can all get permits to go downstream to the lower lake (wilderness area), our trip will be to Deep Hole. Otherwise we will paddle a section of the Myakka River that does not require a permit. The paddle to the lower lake goes through some forest, an extensive flood plan with strong flow, and many twists and turns. The paddle back upstream is against a very strong current. The Myakka River usually contains a large number of alligators and numerous wading birds. This part of the river has one of the highest densities of alligators in Florida, so the trip is not recommended for those who are afraid of alligators. We will stop for lunch on our way back upstream.

Bring lunch, water, and money for the entrance fee. The entrance fee is $4.00 for one person and $6.00 for two or more people per vehicle

Level II Intermediate due to distance and strong current. Must be able to paddle 3+ miles upstream against the current, be very stable in your boat, and be able to paddle 9 miles in total.
