We will paddle either north or south in Sarasota Bay depending on wind direction and conditions. The bay is about 3 miles wide and has a fetch of 5-6 miles north to south which can result in bouncy paddling in windy conditions. Participants should be prepared to paddle in anything from calm conditions to foot high, closely spaced wind waves.
Location: Sapphire Shores Park (formerly Sun Circle Park) in north Sarasota. The kayak launch is a small, sandy beach at the south end of the park. You may park on the road running along the park.
Schedule: Saturday, January 27. Meet at 9:30 am. Launch by 10:00 am.
Additional information: There are no restrooms at the park. If arriving from the north via SR 301 or University Parkway from I-75, there is a restroom at the 7-Eleven, on the right just past the intersection of SR 301 and University Parkway. If arriving from the north via US 41 (Tamiami Trail), there is a restroom at the MacDonald's on the right as you are passing Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.
Difficulty: Level II (if winds are under 10 mph), Level III (if winds are over 10 mph). Please monitor weather conditions to determine if this paddle is appropriate for you. Distance will be 8 to 10 miles
Required: Kayaks 16 feet or longer with bulk heads and spray skirts. Participants should have the ability to use a low brace if needed and to be able to get back in your boat should an assisted rescue be required. Bring lunch. We will stop somewhere along the way for a picnic lunch.
