FWC public meeting: Critical Wildlife Area request for Alafia Bank

  • 18 Jul 2016
  • 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
  • Gardenville Recreation Center on 6215 Symmes Road, Gibsonton

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) requests public input at an informational workshop about the Critical Wildlife Area (CWA) request for the Alafia Bank Bird Sanctuary.

CWAs are established by the FWC under a Florida Administrative Code rule to protect important wildlife concentrations from human disturbance during critical periods of their life cycles, such as breeding, feeding, or migration.

The Alafia Bank, (islands in Hillsborough Bay at the mouth of the Alafia River) hosts the largest wading bird colony on the west coast of Florida - 17 species, 12,000 nesting pairs. Audubon urges you to support their recommendation of a 100 foot buffer and year round protection for this globally important bird area.
