LOCATION: Lake Magdalene (when you RSVP, address will be sent); TIME: 9:00am - 4:00pm; LEVEL: L2 and L3 Skills
THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO NO MORE THAN 10 MEMBERS
DESCRIPTION: This course will be taught in instructor's backyard (i.e., Lake Magdalene, in the Carrollwood section of Tampa). The lake is inherently flat water, but some of the drills will enable simulation of moving water. All participants will be required to demonstrate a wet exit, at the beginning of the class.
This class will cover the following four areas (specific subjects can be adjusted based on the needs and interest of participants).
1) Rescues (self and assisted)
2) Towing (short tows, long tows, etc.)
3) Stroke refinement
4) Rolling Improvement: We will go through a progression of exercises to strengthen your roll, ideally advancing from a flat water roll into a dynamic water combat roll. The intent of this section is not to teach beginning rolling but, rather, to enhance the roll of folks who already have one. This module is optional and you do not need to have a roll in order to participate in the class.
EQUIPMENT: Required: Kayaks must have deck lines and front/back watertight hatches. PFDs must be worn at all times (no inflatables).
Recommended: Tow lines, paddle floats, pumps, and whatever rescue equipment you have. Spray skirts are recommended, but not required.
Dress for immersion – there is a 100% certainty that you will be in the water. Current water temps are in the mid 60s, so a wetsuit is recommended.
FOOD: Please bring your own. However, if there is interest, we could do a barbecue at instructor's house (hamburgers and hot dogs, etc.) for lunch.
NOTE: This course will be run by Steven Henkind. Steve is an ACA L3 Instructor (currently working on L4) and this will count as an official ACA L3 course. In order to meet ACA requirements, each participant must either be an ACA member, or pay $5 for ACA insurance. In addition, as per the ACA, the class size can be no larger than 10.
