Cool off or snorkel in the 76°F clear water at several springs feeding "the Chaz", an Outstanding Florida Waterway that passes through undeveloped coastal forest and salt marsh. . Visit first and second order springs at the main river and paddle up tributaries to visit other springs, including The Crack. Watch for otters in the brackish river.
Location: Chassahowitzka River Campground boat ramp, 8600 W Miss Maggie Dr, , Homosassa, FL 34448 (take US-19 to CR 480 W to end of road).
Schedule: Wed Sep 27, meet time 08:30 am, launch time 09:00 am, approximate return time 01:00 pm
Additional information: $5 parking fee or $7 with trailer, CASH only. Restrooms, camp store, kayak rentals near the launch. No amenities downriver. Expect shallow sawgrass-lined narrow tributaries with mild current, short hikes through ankle deep water/mud and mosquitoes, possible snakes, spiders, alligators, low trees, submerged logs, and very few places to get out of the boat. We'll picnic along the river.
Difficulty: Level II, 7 miles
Required / suggested: PFD, whistle, kayak with flotation. Food, water, hat, sun and insect protection. Snorkel gear optional.
