DUE TO WEATHER, THIS TRAINING HAS BEEN DELAYED ONE DAY

TO SUNDAY, 7/1/18, SAME TIME AND PLACE.

PLEASE CONFIRM REGISTRATION / WAIT LIST WITH STEVE.

DATE:  JULY 1, 2018.  June 30, 2018 .  If the weather does not look good, we may move to July 1st.

TIME: 0800- 1600 (Approximately)

LOCATION: Fort DeSoto to Egmont Key (but might be adjusted, depending upon conditions). Exact launch site TBD, depending upon conditions.

LEVEL: TBSK L3 skills. If you have any doubts as to your skill level, please contact me before signing up for this class.  Feel free to contact Steve at 914-420-1615 with any questions.

THIS SESSION WILL BE OPEN TO NO MORE THAN FIVE PARTICIPANTS. This course will be run by Steven Henkind. Steve is an ACA L4 Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor, ACA L3 River Kayak Instructor, and ACA L1 Canoe Instructor. He is also certified as a Whitewater Rescue Technician, Professional.

If I can get another certified L4 instructor to participate (or someone with equivalent skills), then I may increase the class size to up to ten participants.

DESCRIPTION:  This class will focus on open water rescues and other L4 skills. We will perform T rescues in open water and will aim for a target time of 1 minute. We may do other rescues, as well.

Other skills that we may work on will depend on conditions and may include:

• Low brace and low brace turns

• Surf launches and landing

• Stroke Refinement

• Towing

• Navigation

• Use of the VHF radio.

In order to ensure the safety of the class, everyone is going to need to demonstrate a roll, a wet exit, and a T rescue, before we head into open water. I take safety very seriously and if you, I, or anyone else, has any doubts about your skill level, then you will not be allowed to participate in this class.

Unfortunately, I can’t control the weather – or the water conditions. Ideally, we will have some waves and surf to work with. If we don’t have waves and/or surf, then I will still run the class, but may shift more emphasis onto navigation (e.g., with chart and GPS) and communications (e.g., with the VHF radio).

EQUIPMENT:  Required: Sea Kayaks only. Kayaks must have deck lines and front/back watertight hatches. PFDs must be worn at all times (no inflatables). Spray skirts are required and must be worn. You will be required to bring a helmet and will need to wear it in surf and current.

Recommended: Tow lines, paddle floats, pumps, and any other rescue equipment you have.  Dress for immersion – there is a 100% certainty that you will be in the water.

NOTE:  This will count as an official ACA L4 course. In order to meet ACA requirements, each participant must either be an ACA member, or pay $5 for ACA insurance. In addition, I will ask the class participants to split the registration fee across the entire class ($20 to be split by the number of participants). .

REGISTRATION:  See the Skills Self Assessment Chart on the web site and contact the leader with any questions. Please register (and cancel) on the web site to allow notification of any changes.
