SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY: SEMI-PRIVATE INSTRUCTION
DATE/TIME: December 9, 10 AM - 4 PM.
LOCATION: Lake Magdalene (Carrollwood section of Tampa)
SKILL LEVEL: TBSK Level 0 or 1
DESCRIPTION: Beginning on December 16th, Steve Henkind will be running an ACA Instructor Certification Workshop (ICW) for TBSK. In order to prepare for that ICW, several of the Instructor Candidates have requested that they be able to do some "practice teaching" of real students. Accordingly, we are looking for up to three novice or beginner paddlers who are interested in receiving semi-private instruction, for a portion of the day. The focus will be on basic paddle strokes, but we can/will cover rescues,and towing, as well.
KAYAKS/PADDLES: Ideally you will bring your own kayak and paddle, but we have two extras that we might be able to lend. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN KAYAK, PLEASE CALL STEVE HENKIND, AT 914-420-1615, PRIOR TO REGISTERING FOR THIS CLASS.
ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT: You will be required to bring, and wear, your own PFD to this class (it should be a type 3 or type 5 - paddle specific jacket).
CLOTHING: You will not be required to go in the water, but that is always a possibility (especially for novice/beginner paddlers). If you wish to practice rescues then you probably will need to get in the water. The lake water temperature will likely be in the mid 60s by the date of this class. Accordingly, please wear clothing which will keep you warm, even if you get wet. Options include a wetsuit, a drysuit, wool, and synthetic layers (e.g., fleece). Cotton does NOT insulate when wet and will actually make you colder ..."cotton kills." If you don't own appropriate clothing, then you might consider purchasing some for winter time paddling. BTW, now is a particularly good time to buy gear, because of "Black Friday" sales...
