Trip leader: Terry and Charlene Proeger, terryproeger@gmail.com, 941-356-2185

We will meet at 9:30 and launch by 10:00. This is a wildlife viewing trip with the goal of seeing alligators (if the sun is out) and hopefully many of the birds that frequent the park during the winter months. Depending on the water level and weather conditions, we will either paddle upstream to the Upper Lake and return downriver to the launch site or paddle downstream to the Lower Lake and back. Either direction will require paddling against a strong current for half of the trip. Either direction also includes some narrow sections with many twists and turns. Most of it flows through a flood plain and has little tree cover and grassy banks. Since this part of the river has one of the highest densities of alligators in Florida, the trip is not recommended for those who are afraid of alligators or are unsteady in their kayaks.

Location: Myakka River State Park, 13208 SR-72 (10 miles east of US-75). Enter via the south entrance to the park off SR-72. The entrance fee is $4 for single occupancy vehicles and $6 for multi-occupancy vehicles. Our launch site will be on the south side of the park bridge (on the right just before you cross the bridge), which is a little less than a mile from the south entrance to the park. Rest rooms are available at the park entrance.

Schedule: Sat, Feb 2, meet at 9:30 am, launch by 10:00 am, with a planned return before 2:00 pm

Difficulty: Level II, 7- 8 miles.

Required / suggested / restricted: A wilderness permit is required if we paddle downstream to the Lower Lake. A wilderness permit is free of charge and can be obtained at the main park entrance. You will need to park and go inside to obtain a permit. Allow roughly 10 minutes to get a permit. Registration is required, so we can let you know a day or two prior to the trip whether or not to stop for a permit. Bring binoculars, if you have them, and a picnic lunch.

See the Skills Self Assessment Chart on the web site and contact the leader with any questions. Please register (and cancel) on the web site or RSVP to the trip leader to allow notification of any changes.
