Description: One of four rivers birthed by the Green Swamp, the Peace flows 133 miles from Lake Hancock near Bartow to the Gulf at Charlotte Harbor. Along its northern stretches, the river lives up to its name. Expect to see ospreys calling from towering cypresses, with the odd alligator sunning himself on the banks below. What we didn’t see much of on a recent weekend trip there was people, which is a good thing in the current COVID climate. This will be an up-and-back paddle, negating the need for shuttles. We’ll launch from Heritage Peace River Landing and paddle upstream until we feel like turning around, and in time to beat summer’s afternoon thunderstorms.
Location: We’ll launch and return to from Heritage Peace River Landing, about four miles north of Bartow. Access a map of the river here. Our trip is on Map 1 of the set, with Access Point 2 as our launch. Florida’s Office of Greenways & Trails has posted an interesting story map of the Peace River.
Schedule: Meet at 9:00AM, Saturday, June 13. On water by 9:30, return early afternoon.
Additional information: Participants should bring plenty of water to drink and lunch snacks. NOTE: There are no restroom facilities at the launch or along the river.
This outing is limited to 8 registrations
