Instructors: Jill Lingard, jill.lingard@gmail.com, 352-665-1776;  Scott Jantz, scottjantz2@gmail.com, 386-853-5159; Tom Malone, tjmalone@verizon.net, 410-977-7785; and Tom Joseph, tjoseph10@live.com, 813-504-5785.

Description:   This month we’ll work on different kinds of draw strokes to move our boats sideways.  These maneuvers serve many useful purposes on the water.  Maybe you want to approach a friend to pick up something.  Before we knew they were called draw strokes, Scott and I employed them all the time to pick up debris on cleanups.  Safety-wise, being able to move sideways efficiently can speed up your assisted rescue by approaching a swimmer’s bow faster.  We’ll walk you through the steps of each stroke and then put them into use through some fun simulations.

Location: East side of Gandy Beach in St. Petersburg near The Getaway restaurant.

Schedule: Meet at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 17, and launch by 10:30 a.m.  Weather permitting, we’ll finish up around noon.

Additional information:

  • Parking is free.
  • Current class limit is 8 paddlers. If we can recruit more instructors, we’ll increase the cap to maintain 2:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

COVID-related recommendations:

  • To minimize contact among the group, pair up with another paddler for the day if help is needed moving boats between vehicles and launch.
  • Wear face masks or buffs while loading/unloading boats and gear.
  • Maintain minimum spacing of 6’ on and off the water.

Required gear: Wear a PFD and bring plenty of water to drink.

Please register (or cancel) on the website or RSVP to an instructor to allow notification of any changes.
