Description: Sunday's forecast looks ideal for a paddle from Fort De Soto out to Egmont Key and back.  Once out there, we can roam the beach, walk around the fort, swim, float, or practice falling out of boats, and enjoy a snack before heading back.

This is an open-water paddle of about 5 miles round-trip, with a shipping channel crossing.  We will keep a close eye on the forecast and conditions and adjust our plan as needed.  If the forecast holds, we may feel comfortable circumnavigating Egmont Key before heading back to De Soto, which will increase the miles we paddle accordingly. We'll check in with what the group prefers to maximize safety and enjoyment.

By the way, Egmont Key has a fascinating history and an uncertain physical future.  Check out this three-part series about the island.

Location: We'll launch from the beach near the Gulf Pier at Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway South in Tierra Verde.

Schedule: Meet at 9 a.m. Sunday, October 30 to prep for launch around 9:30-9:45.  We'll aim to return around 2 p.m.

Required gear:  Sea kayaks of at least 16', PFDs, and spray skirts required.  Participants should bring lunch, snacks, and plenty of water to drink.

Difficulty: This is a Level 2 trip due to the open water crossing, potential for 1-foot or higher waves in the shipping channel, and possibility for an extended paddle if we choose to explore more of Egmont Key.   Refer to TBSKs Skills Assessment Chart and contact the trip leaders with any questions.
