Paddlers launching from the Weedon Island kayak launch ramp will meet at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. launch on New Year’s Day, Sunday, Jan. 1, at 1800 Weedon Drive NE, St. Petersburg. We will paddle mostly protected waters, heading south through Bayou Grande and then through the canals, emerging into Placido Bayou and then on to Crisp Park for lunch. Total one-way distance to Crisp Park is 4 miles, round-trip is 8 miles.
The Recreational/Level 1 paddle will leave from Crisp Park following the standard route toward Weedon Island. After making the northward turn and passing under 40th Avenue, the group will continue in the main channel rather than entering the canals and explore what appears to be a somewhat less developed area with mangrove islands.
Please bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. No inflatable PFDs. Bring a dish to share for lunch. TBSK will provide non-alcoholic champagne. We were not able to reserve a picnic shelter so bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on.
If you plan to meet us at Crisp Park just for lunch, we should arrive by water around 11:30 a.m. The address is 3600 Poplar Street NE, St. Petersburg. Remember to park your car along Poplar Street NE or the side streets. The paved lot near the boat ramps is reserved for vehicles with trailers.
