CANCELLED - LEVEL 2 Night Paddle
Several years ago, Mary and I paddled around Davis Island and downtown the night before Gasparilla. Quite the interesting paddle it turned out to be. Apparently, the thing to do is stake out your little bit of parade watching turf the night before the parade. As we paddled up the channel and around downtown it appeared as if every possible bit of turf was inhabited by folks in lawn chairs, tents and campers with the intention of spending the night in place. All the dock space was taken up by boats, sometimes rafted 2 or 3 deep. Parties everywhere. Everyone was in a great mood and interested in seeing kayaks on the river.
We are planning on being at our usual launch site at the Seaplane Basin on Davis Islands at 6:00pm with a launch when ready. Our tentative float plan is to paddle up the ship channel towards downtown on one side then back on the other. Turn around point will be at Armature Works. If the Jose' Gaspar pirate ship is anchored in the off Bayshore, we may paddle near it.
Lights! Do you still have your Christmas kayak decorations? A handheld white light is the minimum required by the Coast Guard. More is better.
If you are running late, text/call me and we'll wait for you. As always, weather rules us. At this point, the prediction is for a cool night with a possibility of a breeze. Distance 8-10 miles depending on course.
