Fred Howard Park - Launch near picnic shelter #6

Saturday, May 18

EVENT DETAILS:

Trip leaders: Tom Malone (tjmalone@verizon.net) and Anthony Sousa (anthony.g.sousa@gmail.com)

Description: TBSK was well represented recently at TRAQS - Traditional Qajaqers of the South - a symposium focused on Greenland style paddling.  We want to share with you some of the things we learned.  We'll focus our training on an efficient and powerful forward stroke, and also some maneuvering.  All types of paddles and kayaks are welcome!  Many of the Greenland techniques can be used with any paddle, and the Greenland paddle can even be considered "the original wing paddle."  Our training will be mostly "on the move," so this will also be our L1/L2 picnic paddle this month.

Location: Fred Howard Park - 1700 Sunset Dr, Tarpon Springs, FL 34689.  We will gather near picnic shelter #6 and shuttle boats about 100 yds over to our typical launch spot just south across the little bridge.

Schedule: Saturday, May 18th start at 9:00 a.m.  Please arrive early enough to be "paddle ready" at 9 a.m. when we do our "ready circle."

Additional information: No charge for parking. Restrooms are nearby. The picnic will be in Shelter #5.

Difficulty: All skill levels are welcome.

Required:

  • Sea kayak of at least 14-feet with water-tight bulkheads
  • Type III or V PFD with whistle attached
  • Sprayskirt is recommended
  • Sun protection, including protective clothing and sunblock
  • Hydration
  • Snacks if needed
  • Emergency/life-saving medication, if needed (please also inform your trip leaders of any medical needs)

Please register on the web site or RSVP to the trip leader to allow notification of any changes.
