SNUG HARBOR FOR NEW YEARS DAY – RECREATIONAL LEVEL
Meet Al Tillson and Tom Malone on New Years Day (January 1) at 1:30 for a 2PM launch from the Pinellas side of Gandy Bridge near Urban Kai. (The later launch time will get us a much better tide level). We’ll be paddling about 2 hours at a leisurely pace into the protected Snug Harbor area, which also has a deep main channel. The last time I was here at a tide level this low, we lost count of the night herons we saw on the exposed mud banks. Hopefully we’ll see a fair array of other water birds, a few manatees, and maybe some white pelicans. With the sun at a low winter angle, the late afternoon light in the mangroves can be especially beautiful.
Any seaworthy kayak with deck lines and/or bow and stern grab loops is fine, but all participants must wear a PFD and carry a whistle or other sound-producing device. Be sure to bring plenty of water, a snack, sunscreen, bug repellent, and footwear that will protect you against possible oyster shells at take outs. At this time of year, it is ESSENTIAL to dress for possible immersion. Please RSVP with leader (813-731-3583 altillson@yahoo.com) or on club website.
Afterwards those who care to imbibe (including the paddlers on Jill’s trip) will reconvene at the Getaway, so you might want to leave some dry clothes in your car.
