April Monthly Training -- Paddling Strokes, Wind & Weather

Trip leaders: Anthony Sousa + Tom Malone.

Proposed: On shore portion covering strategies for wind and conditions, forecast resources, and observation methods.  Stroke training will focus on turning and maneuvers. Participants will also have opportunity to tell us anything else they are interested in working on. We will paddle the parks paddling trail as part of our training.

Location: Upper Tampa Bay Conservation Park, 8001 Double Branch Rd., Tampa, FL 33635

Location Notes: We will try to find an available shelter or picnic table and update participants, so that we can do some on-shore classes first. For the launch, there is a dock with a canoe/kayak launch adjacent to the Nature Center. We will stage our kayaks near but not on the ramp.

Schedule: We'll meet in a circle at 1 p.m., kayaks staged, kit ready to go, and people ready to launch. Please arrive early enough to stage your kayak and kit before we meet (12:30 a.m. is recommended).

Additional information: Public restrooms are available.

Difficulty: All Levels

Required / suggested / restricted:

  • Required: 14-foot kayak or longer with bulkheads or flotation, PFD w/whistle attached worn at all times, paddle, spray skirt is recommended.
  • Suggested: Quick dry clothing that protects you from sun,  secure water shoes (no flip flops), hydration sources, sunblock, sunglasses, emergency medications.
  • Optional: snacks, camera, etc.  Rescue kit for aspiring trip leaders.
