March Monthly Training – Kayak Strokes & Maneuvers

Trip leader: Anthony Sousa, anthonygsousa@gmail.com, (727) 455-2615.

Description: Learn strokes and techniques to maneuver your kayak, maintain directional control, and move forward with confidence.

Location Notes: Craig Park on Spring Bayou in Tarpon Springs.  For parking, go to the far end of the park (not the actual park address) and look for the boat ramp.  You can drop your kayak off in the grass next to the outrigger canoes, then park.  If parking is full, use nearby street parking.

Note: Trailers must display a City of Tarpon Springs boat launch permit. If you use a trailer, park on nearby streets after dropping off your kayak.

Schedule: Saturday, March 14, 2026.  We'll start on land at 9 a.m.  Please arrive early enough to unload and get ready prior to the start and to help others.  8:30 a.m. is recommended for arrival, staging and check-in.

Additional information: Public restrooms are available.

Difficulty: All levels welcome. We will vary instruction to meet the needs of novice to advancing paddlers alike. Novices can develop the basics while more experienced paddlers can refine and practice "advanced strokes in flat water" or other skills, depending on the number of coaches.

Inclement Weather Plan: If winds are strong, we may move to an alternate sheltered location nearby.

Required / suggested / restricted

  • Required: All kayaks types are welcome. PFD w/whistle. Lifesaving meds carried on person/kayak and trip leader informed. Hydration.
  • Suggested: Spray skirt, fast dry clothing, splash jacket/wind breaker, secure water shoes (closed toe, closed heel, lace or hook-and-loop for fit), sun protection. Warming layers in dry bag.
