Picnic paddle-FORT DE SOTO PARK  - LEVEL 1

Trip leader/Co-leader: Bob Gallo-312-515-7963 1bobgallo@gmail.com; Claudia Viehl - 203-918-9162 claudia.veihl@gmail.com

Description: We’ll meet at the kayak rental area and paddle down that channel, into Mullet Key Bayou, and along the shoreline at a leisurely pace toward the eastern end of the island. Obviously we’ll make mid-trip adjustments in response to weather changes and group needs. We’ll plan to stop at least once along the way for a snack if needed and if desired a quick swim. Manatees are especially common in the channel, and we’ll hopefully see an array of waterfowl, fish, and a few dolphins. In the past at least half a dozen manatees and an equal number of dolphins in the Bayou were sighted.

Please register on the club website or with the trip leader to receive notification of schedule changes or cancellation.

Location: Turn right at the T intersection at the flagpole just after passing the entrance station. (Unless you have an annual pass, you need to pay the $6.00 entry fee at one of the vending machines scattered around the park or downloading the ParkMobil app makes paying easy peasy). The rental location will be on the right approximately opposite the entry for Bay Pier. A park map is available at the link below. The most convenient restroom is across the road at the GULF pier (on the side of the parking lot away from the beach).

PLEASE NOTE: We will park in the field at the rental and launch from an opening in the mangroves to the left of the rental area as you face the water (and face away from the paved road). The dirt road that leads to that opening is blocked off to vehicular traffic, but kayaks and kayak wheels are fine or we will help each other on the short portage.

Schedule: Saturday October 17th  Meet at 8:30 am for a prompt 9:00am launch. Return no later than 12:30pm to meet up with the L2 group 1;00pm at Shelter #3 in the North Parking Lot

Additional information: The most convenient restroom is across the road at the GULF pier (on the side of that parking lot away from the beach).
